How to Enjoy Bad Movies.

My 3 regular readers (if they’re paying attention) know that I love movies. A large portion of posts on my blog are dedicated to movies. My wife and I often rate movies and tv shows on IMDB, and it may surprise you to know that we have rated over 800 titles, and none of them are rated lower than 6/10.

(Actually, that is a small lie, we’ve rated one movie a 5, but only one, and it is universally panned by EVERYONE!)

There is a reason for our rather generous ratings though, and that is because I love movies.

There has been a real shift in our culture over the last few years. It seems that people lean heavily in the direction of negativity. As a culture it appears we go looking for things to complain about, and entertainment seems to be a VERY popular target for negativity and hate. People go into movies and tv shows with unrealistically high expectations, and if those expectations are not met, they rage and complain. Or worse, they watch a show expecting to hate it, and go looking for reasons to hate it. The show doesn’t even get a chance.

But, I love movies and tv shows. When I view a show I want to enjoy it. I will go out of my way to find reasons to enjoy it, and my rating system is based on how much I have to “adjust my expectations” in order to enjoy a show.

More recent additions to the MCU, such as “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” were easy to rate fairly well. (We gave an 8/10 for both.) Those two shows were heavily misunderstood by marvel fans. I admit on the first viewings I was initially a bit put out, it took me a few moments to realize that these shows were comedies! I think one of the reasons that they rated so low was because marvel fans expected the “same old, same old” and didn’t get it.

Personally, I didn’t mind them. They had their issues, sure, but once I realized I wasn’t gonna be watching a standard issue Marvel Phase 2 or 3 movie, I adjusted my expectations and was able to enjoy them for what they were. It requires a bit of mental gymnastics, but it works for me.

Others, such as “Quantumania” and “The Marvels” tried to live up to but couldn’t meet the standards of previous MCU movies; but I don’t agree with the HUGE amount of hate they got. They were good movies! Not GREAT movies, but good. I got my enjoyment from them…. once I adjusted my expectations!!

Life is too short to waste time watching crappy entertainment, and there is far too much negativity in the world for me to feel right adding to it, so I’ll keep adjusting my expectations and suspending my disbelief, and enjoying my movies and tv shows.
